Make a habit of running strides after at least two of your weekly runs. Strides are generally short bursts of up-tempo running, usually between fifty and one hundred meters, at a pace faster than your current 5k race pace. Jog an equal distance between each “stride” for a recovery. Strides help to keep specific muscle groups in tone and promote balanced muscle groups. Think of strides as “push-ups” for your legs. I try to run on stride for every mile I run that day.

“It’s true, the scale can only give you a numerical reflection of your relationship with gravity. That’s it. It cannot measure beauty, talent, purpose, life force, possibility, strength, or love. Don’t give the scale more power than it has earned. Take note of the number, then get off the scale and live your life. You are beautiful!” — Steve Maraboli

Last Sunday, Hear The World (run). founder, Ayden Marie Vargas (pictured left) participated in LA’s 5th semi-annual CicLAvia event in Downtown Los Angeles to raise awareness about the effects everyday traffic can have on your hearing. The event ran from 10am-3pm and with the course being 9 miles there was plenty of time to do the entire thing more than once - which is just what these five Hear The World (run) cyclists did! Along the course there were farmers markets, various stages where live music was played, food trucks, flash mobs, uni-cyclists and moving dinner tables.

According to their website, “Ciclovias started in Bogota, Colombia, over thirty years ago as a response to the congestion and pollution of city streets. Now they happen throughout Latin America and the United States.
CicLAvia makes the streets safe for people to walk, skate, play and ride a bike. There are activities along the route. Shop owners and restaurants are encouraged to open their doors to people along the CicLAvia.“

Hear The World + Hear The World (run). were happy to be a part of the 100,000 strong group of cyclists, runners, skateboarders and rollerbladers who were promoting clean streets in Los Angeles. Free of pollution, traffic and most of all…unnecessary NOISE!
There is rumored to be four of these fantastic events in 2013! To keep up to date with the next event please check out their website www.ciclavia.org

“I do, after all, love a challenge. Not just the result at the end, but the drudgery in the middle, the hard work, the sweat, the mess of transformation. I love the process of getting there, especially when “there” isn’t a fixed point, but the constant renaming as each finish line morphs into another start line.”

As many as 39 percent of distance runners may experience a cramp in their calves, hamstrings, or quadriceps before they finish a race. While many people blame dehydration, Kevin Miller, Ph.D., an exercise scientist at North Dakota State University who works full-time studying cramps, says exhaustion is usually the culprit. Here’s how to fix (and even prevent) spasms in your tired legs.

Do this workout at least 3 times a week:
Thirty minutes of any type of exercise is good for your health, but what you do with that time really makes a difference when it comes to protecting your heart. We asked Johnny Lee, MD, cardiologist and spokesperson for the American Heart Association, to map out the ideal routine. Big bonus: It’ll also help you slim down and tone up.
I believe in the runner’s high, and I believe that those who are passionate about running are the ones who experience it to the fullest degree possible. To me, the runner’s high is a sensational reaction to a great run! It’s an exhilarating feeling of satisfaction and achievement. It’s like being on top of the world, and truthfully…there’s nothing else quite like it!
